LLB Law with Chemistry (M1F1)

The Law with Chemistry programme is particularly suited to students planning a career in an area of the legal profession which requires a knowledge of Chemistry, or a career in Chemistry which requires an understanding of the legal aspects of issues such as health and safety, environmental protection, patents, etc. The two components are taught successively to give you the maximum opportunity to absorb the academic ethos of each discipline.

Chemistry is studied in the first two years with a programme similar to that of the Chemistry F100 programme, followed by study in the Faculty of Law for the next two years.

a moot
Students taking part in a legal moot or mock trial, in which they argue legal points in front of judges.

The third year of the programme provides a transition to legal methods, the emphasis being on study skills and understanding legal reasoning and method through study of the core legal subjects necessary for practice.

In the final year, studies are made of the core legal subjects necessary for exemption from the academic stage of the Common Professional Entry examinations, with mandatory units in Criminal Law and Property Law 2 and 3. Additional subjects are selected from a wide choice of units (over 30) including Environmental Law and Intellectual Property Law (patents, etc.). In lieu of one unit, students can submit a dissertation, providing a valuable opportunity to carry out a project linking chemical and legal studies.

Career Opportunities

Before commencing pupillage or trainee solicitorship, graduates are required to pass academic vocational training courses. Passes in the core subjects with the Chemistry and Law degree will exempt a student from the academic stage of training in the same way as a conventional 3-year degree.
It is anticipated that the majority of Chemistry and Law graduates will proceed to professional legal qualification, but past experience indicates that graduates in Chemistry and Law will be increasingly in demand in many areas where a trained numerate mind is required (banking, financial world, etc). Many Bristol graduates continue their studies in higher education for MSc and LLM degrees.
