The University
of Bristol is a research-based university of international standing.
It was founded in 1876 as University College, Bristol, and received
a Royal Charter in 1909. It was the first higher education institution
in England to admit women on an equal basis to men. Among UK Universities,
only Cambridge has more departments graded 4 and 5 (national and
international excellence). Both Earth Sciences and Chemistry are
grade 5 Departments. The University is working hard to build on
its track record as a dynamic international community dedicated
to learning, discovery and enterprise. It is committed to attracting
students with outstanding academic potential from right across the
social spectrum.
Two Bristol
research groups are involved in the DeepBUG project. These are the
Geomicrobiology group, based in the School
of Earth Sciences, and the Organic Geochemistry
Unit based in the School
of Chemistry.
