The Geomicrobiology
group has been awarded 22 research grants from a range of different
sources, including NERC, The Royal Society, The Wolfson Foundation
and the EC (Bioavailability and turnover of low molecular weight
organic compounds) and several commercial companies (e.g. Amoco
BP, SERC-Baker, Hyder, HydRock Consultants Ltd). All completed NERC
grants have been assessed as satisfactory or good and several have
been graded as excellent. The group's innovative research has resulted
in publications in Nature and other top science journals and has
been widely reported in the press. In recognition of this research
the Deep Biosphere was made a new ODP Initiative in its Long Range
Plan and an International Project Planning Group (PPG) was established.
In 1998 an ESF Network on Exploring the sub-seafloor biosphere was
established.
Other research
areas include microbe:mineral interactions, bacterial lipid biomarkers,
sedimentary microbial biogeochemistry, microbial involvement in
the fossilization process and oil reservoir microbiology. The Geomicrobiology
research group currently includes 4 PDRA's, 7 Ph.D. students and
a technician.
