MASS SPECTROMETRY RESOURCE

Solvents

Introduction

In EI and CI mass spectrometry, it is often possible to see large contributions to the mass spectrum from the solvent. This is especially the case if you sample is too dilute. This page lists the EI mass spectra of several common solvents specifically restricted to the mass region above m/z 50 (this excludes methanol and acetronitrile which have masses below 50). These spectra can also be found in the NIST Chemistry WebBook. For CI spectra, some of the ions will be shifted up one mass unit due to protonation. Deuterated solvents will also be shifted up the mass scale. Click on the solvent name below to go to the relevant spectrum.
