Organic and Biological Chemistry

Tom Simpson

The Organic and Biological Section of the School of Chemistry is one of the largest and most successful in the UK, and as such makes a major contribution to the outstanding international reputation of the School of Chemistry in teaching and research. Both of these activities are very broadly based and encompass a wide range of synthetic, supramolecular, physical organic, biological, environmental and analytical chemistry.

More details of these can be found in the links opposite and in the web pages of individual members of staff. I hope that you will find these both interesting and informative. I, and my colleagues will be pleased to hear from you and to provide more information about any of our activities.

PhD studentships

The Organic & Biological Section welcomes PhD students from the UK, mainland Europe and countries throughout the world. We are pleased to receive applications from prospective students at any time. Further information about applying for postgraduate studies in the Organic and Biological Section and elsewhere in the School can be obtained from the Director of Graduate Recruitment.

Bristol Synthesis Meeting

The Section hosts the annual Bristol Synthesis Meeting, founded in 2001. It is held in April each year and features talks from five international authorities covering all aspects of synthetic chemistry. Each year it attracts an audience of over 650 participants to make it one of the largest single day scientific meetings in Europe.

2011 Wilson Baker Lecture

The Wilson Baker Lecture, and supporting symposium, is held annually to commemorate Professor Wilson Baker who was Professor of Organic Chemistry at our institution from 1945-1965. Since 1966 the lecture has been delivered by many distinguished organic chemists from the UK and elsewhere.

The 2011 Wilson Baker lecture was given by Prof John Vederas FRS from the University of Alberta on Wednesday 9 March 2011. See full programme.
