Polymer Degradation

Joung-Yoon Choi (previous student, left the group in 2002)

Under the exposure of radiation, polymers age through decades. This trend can be understood on a molecular level by studying the chemical structure changes. With this knowledge the useful life times of polymers can be predicted and the knowledge is directly applicable to polymers used in load bearing, insulation cables and sealing applications.

Cross polarisation times
By changing the Cross Polarisation time the sizes of peaks change which gives information about the mobility of different carbons in the polymer chain.

Techniques used: 13C Solid State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. Electron Spinning Resonance Spectroscopy.

This project is funded by AWE Hunting-BRAE.
