Departmental Laser Safety Officer
For information about laser safety, please see the university web site
at: https://www.bris.ac.uk/safety/uobonly/laser/
As laser safety officer I am required to keep a register of most
lasers
and laser users within the School of Chemistry.
Laser Users
All users of Class III or Class IV lasers should register themselves on the university system at:
https://safe-srv.sft.bris.ac.uk/lasers. Notes on this form:
- Please make sure your supervisor is entered; if he or she does not appear on the drop down list please contact me.
- All the boxes require some text in them, but these can be updated later.
- For the "Lasers to be used", the add from list is not yet set up, so just put a general indication of the type of lasers to be used
- For the "Experiments to be performed" please copy and paste the information from your project risk assesment at:
https://dlm.chm.bris.ac.uk/lab/safety/index.php
- For the "Labs to be used" the drop down list is also not yet set up, so just type the lab room number(s) in.
- For the "COSHH/Risk assessment and/or Scheme of Work ref:" I suggest the following: "See project risk assessment on Chemistry web system and laboratory note book"
- After completing the form, the message "Your form has not been accepted" will be displayed if you go back into the system until both myself and your supervisor have approved the form.
The paper registration form is no longer being used.
Lasers
If you are responsible for any laser (apart from a Class I laser),
please let me know the following details:
- Type
- Manufacturer
- Serial Number
- Class
- Wavelength
- Power (CW lasers) or energy/pulse (Pulsed lasers)
- Location
- Responsible Staff Member
You can see the lasers registered to you clicking on the "Lasers" link
near the bottom of this page:
https://dlm.chm.bris.ac.uk/lab/index.jsp.
If
the link does not appear then no lasers are registered to you. This
link will also allow authorized users to see the full list of
registered lasers.
Laser pointers must be registered with me also; I need the
following
details:
- Responsible Person
- Location
- Class
- Power
See also the risk assessment for
laser work in a laboratory.
