Hints for using the STDB

Spin Trap notation is divided into common and 'weird'. The common spin traps are abbreviated as :

S	3,5-DIBROMO-4-NITROSOBENZENE SULFONATE (DBNBS)

Please do not try to understand the POBN and DBNBS abbreviations. These may be entered into the "Spin Trap" field. Other spin traps may be found in the "Spin Trap" field and/or the "Miscellaneous" fields, so you try each field to make sure you find your data. A complete list of spin traps can be found by searching the symbol abbreviations for the "@" character - this yields a super set of possible spin traps.

Solvent notation is odd. Aqueous solution at neutral pH is noted as AQ07P4. To search for any aqueous solution, just enter "AQ". Toluene is TO, Benzen is BZ. Search the symbol abbreviations for additional solvent notation.
Radical notation uses the period to indicate the location of the radical. For instance, to search for a carbon centered radical, use ".C" in the radical field. The period must be the first character in the radical field.
All searches are done inclusive, ie... the data record must merely include the information you have entered.
All searches are done case insensitive. You may enter upper or lower case letters equally.
Main record searches yield data that includes the record ID in brackets, as in "[409]". This number is the link between the main data table and the journal reference table. You will notice the record ID is underlined, it is linked to the journal table. You will then get the full journal reference and all the associated data records.
Journal reference searches are executed using either the reference ID number or reference text, such as an author's name or a portion of the article title. If you enter both a reference ID and text, then both searches will be performed. A reference search also returns the record ID in brackets with a link to the main data table. Therefore, you can search for all the papers by Chignell, then click on an [ID] and view all the data entries for that paper.

The NIEHS is the source of nearly all the data in the database. Most was accumulated over five years of scouring reprints. An extra field in the database indicates the source of the data. The possible field values are :

NIEHS	Original data entered by NIEHS staff
Other	subsequent data entered by student summer workers
Local	data entered into the tables through the revised multi-user command line program
WWW	data entered into the tables throurgh the new multi-user WWW program

Adding data to the STDB can be done via either the command line program or the WWW interface. A separate table of user names and passwords is maintained with the data tables. The system administrator must edit this file to add new user accounts to the list of trusted users who may add new records to the database. Contact the system administrator of the database server to be added to the list. To avoid any possible mistake made by either human error or networking traffic, it is recommended that you send in your requests to the system administrator to edit the database.
You must add a new journal reference before adding associated data to the main data table !
- Adding journal records. You will find an entry screen for the reference information. When the record is added, the program will report the reference ID number. Remember this number, you will need to use it to add records to the main data table.
- Adding main data records. You will find an entry screen for the main data information. One field will be the reference ID number. Be certain you enter the correct reference ID which corresponds to the correct journal reference. If you are unsure, search the journal records or query the database system administrator.
