HEALTH

The depletion of the ozone layer means that more ultraviolet radiation is reaching the Earth's surface, that could lead to serious health problems.

Skin Cancer

Radiation can break bonds in DNA but most of these are repaired by proteins. Unrepaired genetic damage of DNA can lead to skin cancer.

Premature ageing of skin

Prolonged exposure to the Sun causes premature ageing, which can be avoided with proper ultraviolet protection.

Immune Suppression

Over exposure to ultraviolet radiation may suppress proper functioning of the body's immune system.

Cataracts

This is a loss of transparency in the lens of the eye, causing cloudy vision. It can lead to blindness if left untreated.

Radiation does not only affect humans. For example, crop yields could be reduced and disruptions in the marine food chain could occur.
