Its name comes from the Latin word 'radius' meaning 'ray'. The element was discovered in 1898 and then isolated in 1911 by electrolysis of pure radium chloride and a mercury cathode. It is a white metal with chemical properties similar to Barium. Its most important property is its radioactivity which by radiotherapy is used to treat cancer.
