This was the first element to be discovered by Marie and so she named it after her birthplace of Poland. It is an extremely rare element found in Uranium ores. It is sometimes called Radium F.
It is sometimes used as a heat source since most of the alpha radiation can be adsorbed as heat within the polonium and its container.
