The Chernobyl accident- the most serious accident  in a nuclear power plant to date- occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear power plant in the USSR on April 26th, 1986. One of the reactors in the power plant exploded when a safety test went wrong. A massive amount of radioactive material was released into the environment, and spread across a huge area.
