THE REACTOR

The reactor involved in the accident at Chernobyl was of the RBMK-1000 type.

This uses a slightly enriched (2% ²³⁵uranium) uranium dioxide fuel.

This reactor can become unstable at lower power levels, and is then in danger of  sudden uncontrolled power increases, as happened in Chernobyl.
