Antipsychotic Drugs:

These were the first to be discovered and are primarily used for treating schizophrenia. They diminish delusions, hallucinations and thought disorders.

They can also be used in bipolar to control the manic episodes as they reduce agitation and have a calming effect.

The most common are phenothiazines, thioxanthenes and indoles.

The major drawback in this is the serious neurological disorder tardive dyskinesea which occurs in patients who have taken these drugs over a long period. The symptoms of this condition are:

This is a serious side effect as sometimes the symptoms do not disappear once the drug is stopped and as of yet, there is no known cure.
