To make gram quantities of C60 a carbon arc is the technique used. A voltage is applied to two carbon rods that are just touching and an arc will develop between them. If maintained in an atmosphere of helium or argon clouds of black smoky carbon soot are produced. This can produce 10% C60 and 1% C70 at the correct temperature and pressure.
