Palmitic acid
Palmitate is an ester or a salt of palmitic acid (also known as hexadecanoic acid). It is a white crystal which is insoluble in water and soluble in hot alcohol. It melts at 62.9ºC and boils at 215ºC. Palmitic acid is a saturated fatty acid derived from spermaceti and palm oil; used in soaps, waterproofing, and food additives. It was one of the two ingredients first used in making napalm. Potential Health Effects: Inhalation: May cause irritation to the respiratory tract. Ingestion: Large oral doses may cause stomach upset. Skin contact: May cause irritation. Eye contact: May cause irritation.
