What is chemistry?

At the most basic level, chemistry is the study of matter. Everything in the universe is made of matter – from the smallest atom to the largest planet. The chair you are sitting on, the tree outside, even your eyeball – all these are made of matter. Chemists study the substance, structure and interactions of all kinds of matter. We can understand why water boils at a certain temperature and how to make better medicines because of chemistry. Matter comes in three main forms: gas, liquid and solid. Looking at these different forms of matter helps a scientist understand the properties of different chemicals. Based on these properties, chemists make predictions about the behaviour of different chemicals. Understanding and predicting the different ways a chemical element or compound behaves is what chemistry is all about!
