Coccidiosis

Treatment

Treatment is difficult because clinical signs are not noticeable until the disease is advanced.  If drugs are given at an early stage, clinical signs can be prevented.

Sulphonamides:  Sulphaguanidine, or readily absorbed sulphonamides such as sulphamerazine or sulphamethazine.  Sulphaquinoxaline is also used. Sulphonamides are organic compounds that contain the group -SO2.NH2. They are amides of sulphonic acids.  These are bacteriostatic antibiotics, because they inhibit the growth of the bacteria, but do not kill them.

Amprolium:  Effective against avian coccidiosis.  It is an antagonist (prevents the action of) thiamine (vitamin B1) and therefore interferes with the metabolism of the parasite.

Lasalocid: Effective against preventing coccidiosis but not treating.
