Here is one method¹ that avoids the use of the expensive thymidine starting material, and instead uses the readily available alternative D-mannitol:

thymidine	D-mannitol

The reaction in the penultimate step does not proceed with any stereochemical control. The mixture produced can only be separated cleanly after removal of the silyl protecting group.
