The Harvard Mark I, IBM’s first large scale automatic calculating computer was developed. At 51 feet long and weighing 5 tons it incorporated 750,000 parts. Including 3304 electronic relays, as on/off switches; to solve addition problems in less than one second, multiplication in about six seconds and twelve seconds for division.
