Uses Of Formaldehyde
Bakelite (the first plastic) is the trademark name for formaldehyde and phenol
polymer; it is formed in the reaction displayed opposite: 
Formica is the trademark name for formaldehyde and urea polymer. It is a resin  used widely as glue, fire retardant and water repellant .  
Similar reactions of formaldehyde with proteins (amino formylation) leads to its use in the tanning industry and for treating various vegetable proteins to render them fibrous.
