The Chemistry of Modern Flight

Glossary

Auto ignition temperature: the temperature at which a material catches fire spontaneously.

Flash point: the lowest temperature a flammable liquid can form an ignitable mixture with air.

Open air burning temperature: the temperature at which a material burns in open air.

Antioxidants: a chemical that reduces the rate of of an oxidation reaction.

Gumming: the process that occurs when a material becomes relatively more viscous (i.e. more gum like).
