This is a list of some of the products (anthropogenic and natural) containing sodium benzoate. As you can see, there is a great diversity of products with it in, and a few of them are quite surprising!

  • Margarines

  • Jellies

  • Jams

  • Salad dressing

  • Juices

  • Pickles

  • Carbonated drinks (including) Diet Coke, Fanta, Irn Bru, Lucozade and Panda Pops.

  • Ribena

  • Syrups

  • Olives

  • Sauces (soy, barbeque, oyster)

  • Fruit pies

  • Soup

  • Sweets

  • Caviar

  • Prawns

  • Codfish

  • Maraschino cherries

  • Mincemeat

  • Toothpaste

  • Mouthwashes

  • Denture care products.

Other Uses

  • It is also used as a corrosion inhibitor in antifreeze products like the ones used to stop water in cars from freezing.

  • Intermediate in manufacture of dyes.

  • Antiseptic medicine.

  • Antihistamine medication.

  • Eye creams.

  • Vanishing creams.

  • Used in tobacco and pharmaceutical preparations.

  • Rust and mildew inhibitor.

  • Sometimes it is used as a stabiliser in photographic processing.

  • A new use involves inserting it into plastics e.g. polypropylene to improve strength and clarity.
