UBIQUITIN

General

Introduction

Ubiquitin is an important protein that is found in the cells of plants and animals, including humans. Its main role is to label for degradation unwanted proteins in the body, such as those which have been damaged by use or which are too old. But ubiquitin also reacts with other proteins to change their structure, and hence their function in the body.

It was named 'ubiquitin' because its presence is ubiquitous to many living organisms.
