WYATT Group Facilities

HPLC

We have chiral HPLC equipment fitted with OA, OD, OJ, AD and achiral columns with a computerised 'front-end'.

NMR

NMR Resources include a 300 and 400 MHz service with a 'hands-on' 270 MHz machine. Variable temperature NMR and other state-of-the-art methods are performed by many workers in the group.

Silicone

We are the envy of other research groups in that most of our oil baths contain silicone instead of paraffin.

We say Yes to this...

...and No to this.

Double Manifolds

Double manifolds are of two types but all are fitted with mercury trombone bubblers to both preclude suck-back when purging and to ensure a high over-pressure of inert gas with our sensitve reactions.

Computers

Both PC and Macintosh platforms are used in the group. Computers are extensively used in the research environment for database searches, communication, downloading of papers and writing up. Computer equipment is now purchased from funds raised by the students selling compounds to interested industrial parties. Our latest acquisition is a fancy laser printer for group use paid for entirely with money earned by the PhD and undergraduate students themselves.

Syringes

Gas-tight teflon syringes are used for sensitve reactions. Second and Third year PhD students have their own set of superior quality SGE teflon syringes.

Schlenk Tubes

And ampules with teflon taps are used for sensitve reactions.

Stirrers

Modern IKA stirrers with electronic contact thermometers.

TLC Plates

Silica coming off your aluminium foil-backed TLC plates? And small wonder. We use glass-backed plates.
