Medical uses of quinine:

  • To treat resistance stains of plasmodium falciparum malaria.
  • To treat cerebral, severe or complicated malaria.
  • To prevent vomiting so orally administer drugs can be absorbed.
  • As a muscle relaxant, especially used to treat notunal muscle cramps.

  • Side effects of quinine:

  • Tinnitis (ringing in the ears)

  • Impaired hearing.
  • Nausea
  • Change in blood pressure
  • Vertigo
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Flushing or itching of skin

  • Loss of conciousness

    • Hypertension
    • Coma
    • Renal failure
    • Respiratory failure

    The average lethal dose of quinine for an adult is approximately 8g. Death may occur with in a few hours or a day or two later.
