Process of degradation of the neutrophils cell contents in presence of oxygen.
Oxygen is reduced to a superoxide radical using oxidase as a catalyst, hydroxyl
radical and hydrogen peroxide are also generated in this process. Hydrogen peroxide
then form hypochlorous acid by combining with chloride ions. Hypchlorous acid
reacts with amines to form chloramines. Hypochlorous acid and chloramines are
relatively long-lived compared to other oxidising agents and are very important
in target killing. close
