Cosmetic Applications

Properties of Talc;

  1. Very soft - Talc can be marked by a fingernail. It is at the bottom of the Mohs scale, (diamond is at the top!).
  2. Perfect cleavage - The ease of parting along the cleavage surface is due to the strong bonding within layers but weak bonds (Van der Waal's) between layers.
  3. Pearly on cleavage surface - Otherwise it is greasy or dull.
  4. Low heat and electrical conductivity.
  5. Fire resistant - It hardens when heated to a very high temperature.
  6. Not attacked by acids.

 All of these properties make Talc an ideal primary ingredient in powder cosmetics.
