A highly polar organic liquid, that is used widely as a chemical solvent. Because of its ability to

penetrate biological membranes, it is used as a vehicle for topical application of pharmaceuticals.

It is also used to protect tissue during cryopreservation. Dimethyl sulfoxide shows a range of

pharmacological activity including analgesia and anti-inflammation.

DMSO, or dimethyl sulfoxide is a small

molecule, with a basic molecular formula, without complex ring systems or ligand to

metal bonding. But don't let its appearance fool you. This molecule has helped millions

of people throughout the world, and has a huge range of uses, from medicine, to

simply an ordinary lab solvent. Its potential has not yet been fully tapped

and it will be used heavily in the future of chemistry and medicine alike.
