Colours of Light Sticks

These are some fluorescent dyes that may be added to light sticks to release different coloured light:
|
Blue |
9,10-diphenylanthracene |
|
Green |
9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene |
|
Yellow |
1-chloro-9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene |
|
Orange |
5,12-bis(phenylethynyl)-naphthacene |
|
Red |
Rhodamine B |
Red coloured light sticks tend not to use dyes like rhodamine B due to their instability when stored with the other chemicals in the reaction. Instead, the plastic tube is encased with a fluorescent red pigment which absorbs the energy (at yellow wavelengths) emitted in the reaction and re-emits it as red.
