Community Challenge 2006

Back

Thirty-two postgraduate students and members of staff participated in a Community Challenge organised by the Graduate Chemistry Association on the 29th/30th July. The volunteers' weekend involved redecorating the interior of Weston Park Primary School, Lawrence Weston. Funds for the project were raised through two pub quizzes, a cake sale and support from a range of organisations including Astra Zeneca, the Public Programmes Office of the University of Bristol, the Royal Society of Chemistry, Dulux Decorator Centre, Croda International and B&Q. About £1000 was raised in total.

The volunteers put 50 litres of magnolia paint on the walls, 10 litres of white on the ceilings and 10 litres of dark blue gloss on the skirtings during the course of the project. All the planned work was successfully completed and the school have expressed delight with their new look. The volunteers were kept happy with rounders, football and a picnic on the school field. Free pizza was provided by Domino's and refreshments donated by Mark's and Spencer and Sainsbury's. At the end, 25 litres of magnolia, 10 litres of white, 5 litres of dark blue and primer for door frames and 10 litres of light blue were left with the school for use on further projects. All rollers and paintbrushes were cleaned and shared equally between Weston Park Primary School, Student Community Action and the School of Chemistry for use on further community projects. The Graduate Chemistry Association wish to thank all members of the School of Chemistry and the many other supporters for ensuring this weekend was a resounding success.
