Vancomycin is often described as the antibiotic of last resort. For July's molecule of the Month, we describe how vancomycin works as an antibiotic, and how bacteria resistant to other antibiotics can be killed using vancomycin. Finally, two major concerns are brought up: the development of vancomycin resistance and the difficulties of producing vancomycin on an industrial scale.

There are two versions of this page.

For one of these, you will need the CHIME Plug-in for Netscape to view this page. If you have CHIME, go to Vancomycin Molecule of the Month - CHIME.

Alternatively, we have a version for browsers that do not support CHIME, which provides a link to the PDB file for vancomycin, that you can load into RASMOL or another molecular viewer.
