We can draw some general conclusions
about molecular orbitals:
Number of nodes increase as energy increases
The lowest energy MO has no nodes other than
in molecular plane.
So you can:
· place orbitals in the
correct energy order just by looking at them, and
· identify the
lowest energy MO by inspection.
