The First Stage of Synthesis

Synthesis of Mevalonate from Acetate

Mevalonate is an intermediate formed by:

  1. 2 acetyl-CoA molecules condense to form acetoacetyl-CoA.
    Acetate

  2. A 3rd acetyl-CoA is added and condenses to form a 6 carbon compound. HMG-CoA.These two reactions are reversible and do not commit the cell to the synthesis of cholesterol or other isoprenoid compounds.

  3. The committed step: Reduction of HMG-CoA to mevalonate.
    Mevalonate
