The First Stage of Synthesis
Synthesis of Mevalonate from Acetate
Mevalonate is an intermediate formed by:
- 2 acetyl-CoA molecules condense to form acetoacetyl-CoA.

- A 3rd acetyl-CoA is added and condenses to form a 6 carbon compound. HMG-CoA.These two reactions are reversible and do not commit the cell to the synthesis of cholesterol or other isoprenoid compounds.
- The committed step: Reduction of HMG-CoA to mevalonate.
