The Overall Synthesis of Cholesterol

Cholesterol is synthesised in 4 stages:

  1. First stage

Three acetate molecules condense to form a 6 carbon intermediate, mevalonate.

  2. Second stage

The conversion of mevalonate into activated isoprene units.

  3. third stage

The polymerisation of six 5 carbon isoprene molecules into a 30 carbon linear squalene molecule.

  4. fourth stage

Cyclisation of squalene and further reactions to yield cholesterol.
