GLOSSARY

DIMERIC - An association of two identical molecules, linked together

DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) - The genetic material of most living organisms which plays a major role in the determination of hereditary characteristics by controlling protein synthesis in cells.

ENZYME - Biological catalyst, with each enzyme being specific for a particular reaction or group of similar reactions. The reacting molecule binds to the active site on the enzyme to form a short-lived intermediate. This process greatly increases the rate of the reaction

NUCLEOSIDES - An organic compound consisting of a nitrogen-containing PURINE or PYRIMIDINE base linked to a sugar (ribose or deoxyribose)

PROTEASE - Any enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of proteins into smaller fractions.

PURINE - Organic nitrogenous base

PYRIMIDINE - Organic nitrogenous base

RNA (Ribonucleic Acid) - A complex organic compound in living cells that is concerned with protein synthesis
