Benzene is a nucleophile and will react with eletrophiles due to its cloud of electron density above and below the plane of benzenes carbon ring. When reacting benzene will under go an addition of an electophile which will destroy the delocalised electron system. The loss of the delocalised electron is undesirable and so the addition is followed by an elimination so that the delocalised system of electrons is restored.
