How is Birdflu Treated?
|
|
There are two main ways to fight bird flu in humans, the
first is by vaccination and the second is using antiviral medications such as
Tamiflu or Relenza.
The vaccine cannot protect against the disease H5N1 however
it will give some protection and should prevent recombination of avian with the
human influenza virus. Those that are likely to be eligible for vaccination are
people in direct risk to infection, either through working with poultry or with
treating those who already have the virus.
However, these antiviral drugs are largely preventative, and so need to be taken in
the early stages of the disease if they are to have any significant effect.
