A neurotransmitter is a chemical messenger, which is found in the human body.  Its function is to transmit messages between nerve cells. 

 

A specific example of a neurotransmitter is Acetylcholine.  This neurotransmitter is a chemical messenger in both the peripheral, and central nervous systems.

Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that appears to be involved in learning and memory. Acetylcholine is severely diminished in the brains of persons with Alzheimer’s disease.
