Types of dye

  • Cyanine
    Cyan blue in color (hence the name) but can appear as blue or green depending on the colour of the reflective layer. This was the first dye used in CD-R media, with the patent held by Taiyo Yuden. Has an estimated 75 year lifespan.

     
  • Phthalocyanine
    Has a faint aqua tinge and is less sensitive to everyday light than cyanine. Developed by Mitsui Toatsu Chemicals and has an estimated lifespan of 100 years.

     
  • Metalised Azo
    This dark blue dye, created by Verbatim/Mitsubishi can last up to 200 years.

     
  • Formazan
    Light green, this dye is a hybrid cyanine/phthaloCyanine combination developed by Kodak and has a very long lifespan.
