The thirteen vitamins, four fat soluble and eight water soluble, are organic compounds, generally from the diet, which are vital in small amounts for the life and health of humans and animals. The name 'vitamin' comes from the words 'vital' and 'amine' because the vitamins were originally thought to be amines.
