Laser Processing of Diamond Fibres

laser-cut fibre Diamond fibre cut using a high power excimer laser. The diamond has cut cleanly, but the tungsten has evaporated(!), 'splashed', and then frozen into frills at the edge of the cut.
laser-cut fibre Diamond fibre cut using a high power excimer laser but under much more controlled conditions. The diamond has cut cleanly with no splashing of the tungsten.
laser-cut fibre At lower laser powers, the diamond coating is smoothed. By rotating the fibre in the laser beam, a uniformly smoothed fibre can be made.
