Laser Processing of Diamond Fibres

laser cut fibre Diamond fibre cut using a high power excimer laser. The diamond has cut cleanly, but the tungsten has evaporated(!), 'splashed', and then frozen into frills at the edge of the cut.
laser cut fibre Diamond fibre cut using a high power excimer laser but under much more controlled conditions. The diamond has cut cleanly with no splashing of the tungsten.
laser cut fibre At lower laser powers, the diamond coating is smoothed. By rotating the fibre in the laser beam, a uniformly smoothed fibre can be made.
